Brogdon_Malcolm_12MVirginia senior guard Malcolm Brogdon (Atlanta, Ga.) was named First-Team All-American by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) on Monday (March 14).

Brogdon, who earned the same honor from Sporting News on March 9, is the first Cavalier to earn first-team All-America honors since Ralph Sampson in 1983. Brogdon is also the first Cavalier to earn back-to-back All-America honors since Sampson from 1980-83. Brogdon was named Second-Team All-American last season.

Brogdon became the first player in Atlantic Coast Conference history to earn league player of the year and defensive player of the year in the same season. Brogdon is averaging a career-high 18.7 points on 46.8 percent shooting, including 40.9 percent from 3-point range. His 19.9 points per game in ACC play was the highest at UVA since 2007-08. Brogdon ranks third in the ACC in scoring and has 17 20-point games in 2015-16. Brogdon headlines UVA’s third-ranked defense, which yields 59.7 points per game.

Buddy Hield (Oklahoma), Denzel Valentine (Michigan State), Ben Simmons (LSU) and Brice Johnson (North Carolina) joined Brogdon on the first team.

No. 1 seed Virginia (26-7) will play No. 16 seed Hampton (21-10) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday, March 17. Tipoff at PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C., is set for approximately 3:10 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on TruTV.
