The inevitability of Donald Trump is eroding fast in the wake of the billionaire’s second-place finish in the Iowa Republican caucus.
Trump is still atop the field of GOP contenders in a new Public Policy Polling national survey, but he’s down a whopping nine points over the last month.
Trump was at 25 percent in the latest PPP poll, with Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio each at 21 percent. Ben Carson was next at 11 percent, with Jeb Bush and John Kasich at 5 percent.
The most recent previous polling from PPP had Trump at 34 percent, and had his net favorability at +24 (58 percent favorable/34 percent unfavorable). He is still in plus territory there, but barely (48 percent favorable/41 percent unfavorable).
Trump is also coming in third among very conservative voters. Cruz leads among that subset, at 34 percent, with Rubio at 22 percent and Trump at 19 percent.
Rubio, who finished third in Iowa, a point behind Trump and five behind Cruz, is the one getting an Iowa bump, gaining eight points from the December PPP poll.
The internals suggest that Rubio will continue to do well as the field gets smaller. In a four-candidate race with Trump, Cruz, Rubio and Bush, Rubio would have a narrow one-point lead, 32 percent to 31 percent, over Trump, with Cruz at 23 percent and Bush at 8 percent.
He also wins a three-candidate race with Trump and Cruz – 34 percent going to Rubio, 33 percent for Trump and 25 percent for Cruz.
