Virginia Conservation Network: Attorney General Mark Herring puts Virginians first by supporting the Clean Power Plan

virginia-newThe Virginia Conservation Network issued a statement regarding the announcement from Attorney General Mark Herring today that Virginia will join a coalition of other states and municipalities in taking legal action to support the Clean Power Plan.

“We applaud Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring for joining with others around the country in support of the Clean Power Plan. The rule, finalized by the EPA earlier this year, gives Virginia the opportunity to reduce pollution, maintain electrical reliability, and create new clean energy jobs for Virginians. He clearly understands the threats posed by climate change and the importance of taking action now to protect our coastal communities and future generations.

“The Clean Power Plan is a common sense safeguard against previously unlimited carbon pollution from power plants- the same pollution fueling climate change.  Based in science, it was developed with the input of thousands of stakeholders, and it provides states with the flexibility to design cost-effective plans to meet the pollution reduction targets.

“By limiting the amount of carbon dioxide allowed to spew into our atmosphere, the Clean Power Plant will protect public health, spur clean energy jobs, and cut electricity bills.  Nationwide, this plan is estimated to save thousands of lives and reduced asthma attacks by hundreds of thousands.  It will also encourage the development of clean, renewable energy and the jobs to support it.

“Attorney General Herring is demonstrating leadership, in true Virginia fashion. A strong Clean Power Plan will create jobs, allow for the protection of public health, reduce families’ electricity bills, and spur economic growth across the Commonwealth.”

Marriage equality is the law of the land, sure, but, take nothing for granted

It’s already the settled law of the land, marriage equality, but Virginia still has embedded in its state constitution, thanks to the politics of 2006, a provision narrowly defining marriage as being between one man and one woman.
