Poll: Virginia voters strongly back gun control

virginia newA new poll of Virginia voters show broad, strong support for a variety of gun control measures.

The Public Policy Polling survey of the Old Dominion, conducted entirely after Sunday’s mass shooting in Orlando, registers support for a ban on assault weapons at 55 percent, with 33 percent opposed.

Democrats back an assault-weapons ban by a 75-16 margin. Independents back the notion by a 49-41 split, with Republicans opposing by a 47-35 plurality.

Support is much stronger, and near-universal, on background checks and a ban for those on terrorist watch lists from buying guns. Eighty-eight percent support background checks on all gun purchases, and 86 percent back a ban on those on terrorist watch lists from being able to buy guns.
