Former UVa. baseball player David Adams called up to New York Yankees

uva-logo-new2Former Virginia infielder David Adams has been called up for the first time by the New York Yankees and will be in uniform Wednesday evening. Adams played for the Cavaliers from 2006-08.

The Yankees play host to the Seattle Mariners at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday at Yankee Stadium. Adams is slated to bat sixth and play third base.

A third-round pick (106th overall) in the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Yankees, Adams is the 31st former Cavalier to reach the major leagues and the first to see time in a Yankees uniform.

There now are six former Virginia baseball players in Major League Baseball. Adams joins Sean Doolittle (Oakland), Javier Lopez (San Francisco), Mark Reynolds (Cleveland), Michael Schwimer (Toronto) and Ryan Zimmerman (Washington) as former Cavaliers currently in Major League Baseball.

A native of Margate, Fla., Adams was a regular starter for all of his three years in a Virginia uniform, playing in 183 career games with 182 starts. He hit .325 during his tenure, piling up 226 career hits and 143 RBI, both of which ranked amongst the career top 10 at UVa when he was drafted. He still ranks 10th in career walks at Virginia with 102.

Adams was named a Baseball America and Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in 2006 when he hit .318 with five homers and 49 RBI. He followed it up with his best season at UVa, batting .372 with a .454 on base percentage as he was named a Second-Team All-ACC honoree at second base.

He was a member of three NCAA tournament teams during his time with the Cavaliers.

Adams was batting .316 with three homers and 12 RBI for the triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders and had hits in nine of his last 10 games at the time of his promotion.
