A curious move, this one. Marty White is stepping down as CEO of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank Network and will assume the duties of chief operating officer of the Verona-based food bank. White is staying on as interim CEO while the food bank’s board of directors conducts a search for a new CEO. Read more

Children’s Hour to feature Swami
The Origami Swami Megan Hicks will be the featured attraction at the Wayne Theatre Alliance Children’s Hour on Friday.
Hicks, a former National Storyteller of the Year, presents a program melding paper folding and storytelling through the art of origami.
The show is set for 6 p.m. at the Blue Ridge Christian Fellowship building at 329 W. Main St. in Downtown Waynesboro.
The performance is expected to go 45 minutes.
Admission is $2 for children 12 and younger and $3 for adults. Tickets are available at the door or by calling 540.943.9999.
Nigerian writer to speak at EMU
Helon Habila, who teaches creative writing at George Mason University, will be featured speaker at the first “Writers Read” program of the spring semester at Eastern Mennonite University. Read more
BC group safe after harrowing experience in Costa Rica
It was like somebody was trying to push them off their feet. That’s how Bridgewater College professor Charles Fleis described the Jan. 8 earthquake that hit Costa Rica while Fleis and a group of BC students were in the country on an education-related trip.
“There was a great deal of shaking. Rocks tumbled, trees shook and broke, there were landslides, and the banks of the falls collapsed. This earth rushed down the river and took out the bridge, which we had just crossed,” said Fleis, who had taken a group from BC to Costa Rica to learn about its life and Latin American culture. EMU honors MLK
The late Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968) was “just a man,” but “he left us an image worth imitating, just as he (King) sought to imitate Christ” in his life and work.
Chris Johnson, a student in the master of divinity program at Eastern Mennonite Seminary and campus ministries intern, gave a passionate talk in tribute to the late civil rights leader in university chapel Friday, Jan. 16, to lead off events held at EMU to recognize and celebrate Dr. King.
