Women’s lacrosse: No. 8 UVA wins 16-13 at Penn State

UVA women’s lacrosseThe No. 8 UVA women’s lacrosse team (10-5) picked up a 16-13 victory at Penn State (5-7) on Sunday (April 7) at Panzer Stadium in University Park, Pa.

Seniors Avery Shoemaker (Wyndmoor, Pa.) and Maggie Jackson (Alexandria, Va.) led the Cavaliers’ attack with four goals apiece. Junior goalkeeper Charlie Campbell (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) made 13 saves. Kayla Brisolari led the Nittany Lions with four goals while their goalkeeper, Taylor Suplee, logged 12 saves. Penn State outshot Virginia, 36-34.

In a game that featured eight ties, the Cavaliers held the early advantage, scoring the first three goals of the game to take a 3-0 lead five minutes into the contest. Penn State answered with a 3-0 run of its own. The Nittany Lions took their first lead of the game 31 second into the second half, going up 8-7, but Jackson responded by scoring back-to-back goals in a minute span to put UVA back ahead. Penn State held a 13-12 advantage with nine minutes remaining, but an unassisted goal from Angie Loynaz (Cos Cob, Conn.) tied the game at 13.

Shoemaker pushed the Cavaliers out to a 14-13 lead after scoring on a free position shot with six minutes left in the game. Junior Sammy Mueller (Pelham, N.Y.) and Shoemaker added a pair of insurance goals to secure the victory for the Cavaliers.
