Virginia earned a 55-38 victory at Big East foe Providence Monday night (Nov. 14). The Cavaliers improved to 2-0 on the young season and were led by junior Simone Egwu (12 points) and sophomore Jazmin Pitts (10 points, eight rebounds).

“It’s a road game and we talked about being road warriors,” UVa head coach Joanne Boyle said. “We hit a little adversity, Providence pushed us and we pushed back. I’m happy with the win.”

With the loss, Providence’s record went to 0-2.

Senior Chelsea Shine added eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds for Virginia, which out-rebounded Providence, 43-36.

Ataira Franklin’s transition lay-up with 14:46 left in the first half put Virginia up, 13-4, and prompted a Providence timeout. The Cavaliers continued to build their lead and extended it to 30-18 at halftime.

Providence cut the Cavaliers’ lead to seven points, 38-31, on a 3-pointer by Symone Roberts with 14:08 left in the game. Crosby responded with a trey of her own at the 12:08 mark and Virginia’s lead was back to double digits.

Providence did not get any closer for the rest of the contest and Virginia came away with a 55-38 victory.

Virginia improved to 2-0 all-time against Providence.

Virginia returns to John Paul Jones Arena on Wednesday (Nov. 16) vs. High Point. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
