The government shutdown seems like so long ago now. Days after the House voted overwhelmingly to pass a bipartisan budget deal aimed at ending the sequestration process and quashing any talk of another disastrous shutdown, the Senate voted 64-36 to send the budget to President Obama for his signature.

House and Senate budget negotiators have struck a deal that would avoid another government shutdown and would set spending levels for 2014 and 2015 above the level set by the sequester. The bipartisan deal struck Tuesday will go up for a vote in the House later this week.

The post-judicial filibusters era is off to a rousing start with the Senate confirmation Tuesday of Patricia Millett, of Alexandria to serve on the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.The Senate voted 56-38 to confirm Millett, who was blocked by a Republican filibuster on Oct. 31 in a move that prompted Senate Democrats to push for a rules change.

Virginia Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe on Friday announced his selection of Aubrey Layne as Secretary of Transportation at the Norfolk International Terminal. Layne, a resident of Virginia Beach, has been a member of the Commonwealth Transportation Board since 2009.

By a narrow 52-48 vote, the Senate on Thursday changed decades-old rules allowing for filibusters of judicial nominees, endorsing the so-called “nuclear option” that could change American politics forever after. Senate Republicans have blocked 21 judicial appointments by President Obama using the filibuster.

More than 1,200 of Virginia’s school buildings and facilities are 40 years or older according to a new study ordered by Gov. Bob McDonnell and concluded at the beginning of this month. The governor ordered the report in August in to demonstrate how a change to the Federal Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit could benefit the Commonwealth.
