“Climate change, once considered an issue for a distant future, has moved firmly into the present,” according to a report, Climate Change Impacts in the United States, that was released this year and that includes the findings of 300 experts affiliated with the National Climate Assessment and Development Advisory Committee.

Today Governor Terry McAuliffe signed an executive order to establish a Virginia Climate Change Commission to proactively develop a comprehensive plan to protect Virginia’s communities from the impacts of climate change. Southern Environmental Law Center’s Cale Jaffe, director of the Virginia office, was selected to join the nonpartisan advisory group.

As our population continues to rise, the amount of arable land per capita is declining and climate change is either drying out or flooding many formerly productive agricultural belts, making it more and more difficult to keep up with the growing demand for food.
