Gov. Bob McDonnell Wednesday announced the membership of his newly-created Task Force of School and Campus Safety. The membership includes educators, public safety experts, local leaders, mental health practitioners, legislators, parents, and students.

Dr. Jim Armstead noted professor of military strategy will present “Strategic Analyses of Civil War” at WTA’s Gateway on Thursday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. Dr. Armstead’s presentation will look at the whole of the war, the strategic plans on both sides and address why North won. The presentation has been given round the world to very favorable reviews and is famous for its comprehensive view of the conflict.

Democratic State Del. Jennifer McClellan and Arlington County Commonwealth’s Attorney Theo Stamos condemned the failure of the U.S. House of Representatives to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act and asked Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli to explain why he refused to join 47 other state attorneys general in asking congress to pass the law.

Newtown, Conn., joined a list topped by Blacksburg, Va., of the scenes of the most tragic mass murders in our history. This list contributes to the United States having 80 percent of all firearm deaths among the 23 populous, high-income countries in the world.

The Virginia women’s basketball team won the team title at the Cavalier Classic presented by Holiday Inn University Area with a 54-45 victory over Xavier. The Cavaliers’ Telia McCall (Sr., Marietta, Ga.) was named the MVP of theTournament.

The University of Virginia improved to the number two spot in “best value in public colleges” in the annual Kiplinger ranking of the top 100 schools. Other Virginia schools ranked in the top 100 include the College of William and Mary (4), James Madison University (20), Virginia Tech (28), University of Mary Washington (53), George Mason University (56) and Christopher Newport University (87).

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced Friday that he has appointed Linda C. Jackson to succeed Department of Forensic Science (DFS) Director Peter M. Marone, who will retire at the end of February 2013.

The Virginia Cavaliers fell, 73-70, in double overtime at Alabama. Sarah Imovbioh (So., Abuja, Nigeria) made a layup with 29 seconds left in the game to tie the contest and send it to overtime. The Crimson Tide, trailing 66-63 in the first overtime, banked in a three-pointer with 1.1 seconds remaining to force the second overtime. The Cavaliers had a one-point lead, 70-69, with 15 seconds remaining, before Alabama made two trips to the free throw line to earn the 73-70 victory.

Following a winning season with a 25-6 record, the women’s volleyball coach at Virginia Commonwealth University – Coach James Finley – was terminated with no warning after taking the team to the most successful record in 20 years at VCU and after graduating every senior on the team. A possible reason for the firing? James Finley is openly gay.
