Tim Kaine: Comments on House welfare, budget votes

This week, the United States House of Representatives voted to slash food assistance to poor families and also defund the Affordable Care Act. Many in that body are willing to shut down the government because they are opposed to a health care law that Congress passed, that the President signed, that the Supreme Court affirmed and that has survived more than 40 Congressional repeal votes.

In President Obama’s address to the nation a few days ago, he asked Congress to postpone their vote and spoke of diplomacy between Syria, Russia, and the United States to degrade Syria’s chemical weapon supply. We should continue to put pressure on the Syrian regime to turn over their chemical weapon supplies to an international body and deter an attack of this nature in the future.

Kaine discusses Syria situation on Senate floor

Tim Kaine, a member of the Armed Services and Foreign Relations Committees, discussed the situation in Syria today on the Senate floor, outlining why he believes Bashar Al-Assad’s use of chemical weapons to kill Syrian civilians must have consequences, as well as praising current efforts to pursue a diplomatic path with Russia and Syria – an opportunity he argues would not have been possible without American pressure and resolve.
