Environmentalists and wind energy boosters breathed a sigh of relief this past January when Congress voted to reinstate the Production Tax Credit (PTC), a federal tax incentive for companies that generate renewable energy from wind, geothermal or “closed-loop” biomass (dedicated energy crops) sources.

Senate narrowly passes budget resolution

By one vote, the United States Senate was able to pass its first budget in four years. The 50-49 vote includes $1 trillion in new revenue by closing some tax loopholes on the wealthy. The passage is largely symbolic, since the vote was for a non-binding resolution that will no doubt clash with the budget resolution to be passed by the Republican-majority House of Representatives.

Kaine meets with Pentagon officials to discuss budget issues

U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, a member of the Senate Armed Services and Budget Committees, today met with top officials at the Pentagon, including Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, Deputy Secretary of Defense Ash Carter and Army Chief of Staff General Ray Odierno, to discuss the impact of sequestration in Virginia. The discussions covered the 90,000 civilian employees at the Department of Defense who will be furloughed, reductions to military base operations across the Commonwealth and delays in training and deployments that could decrease readiness. Kaine also spent time talking with civilian employees at the Pentagon about the effects of announced furloughs.
