New Year’s Day is almost here, and it’s a good time to look back upon the best and worst in transportation in our area during 2013. So it is time to rank and rant as we ponder the milestones and frown upon the millstones in transportation in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia during the year that was 2013.

The Terry McAuliffe Inaugural Committee announced the participants taking part in the inaugural ceremony of Gov.-Elect Terry McAuliffe. “We’re excited about the impressive and diverse group of individuals who are participating in the inaugural ceremony,” said Executive Director Brynne Craig.

Sophomore guards Charles Cooke (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) and Ron Curry(Pennsauken, N.J./Paul VI) combined with graduate forward Andrey Semenov (St. Petersburg, Russia/Blue Ridge School) for 53 points to lead James Madison to a 73-68 victory over Ball State on Monday evening at the JMU Convocation Center.

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced today that more than $750,000 in matching grant funds will be awarded to 42 local tourism initiatives as part of Virginia Tourism Corporation’s (VTC) Marketing Leverage Grant program. The grants are designed to help local and regional tourism entities attract more visitors by leveraging local marketing dollars.

Sophomore guard Ron Curry (Pennsauken, N.J./Paul VI) poured in 19 points as JMU held off Hampton in the final minutes for a 55-49 victory on Saturday afternoon in the Governor’s Holiday Hoops Classic in the Richmond Coliseum. JMU won for the second time in three games to improve to 4-9 overall while HU dropped to 5-7. JMU also improved to 4-1 in the all-time series.

UNCG went 8-for-11 from the arc in the second half and received 21 points from Nicholas Paulos and 20 from Kyle Cain to defeat James Madison men’s basketball 75-63 on Wednesday evening at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Sophomore guard Charles Cooke’s (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) career high of 25 points helped James Madison charge past High Point with a 56-29 advantage in the final 22 minutes for an 84-69 victoryon Saturday evening at the Millis Center. JMU snapped a six-game losing skid to improve to 3-8 overall while HPU dropped to 3-5 with its third straight loss.

E-Tech Lumberjack Classic MVP Desmond Haymon poured in 21 points to lead Stephen F. Austin to a 70-57 victory over JMU on Saturday evening at SFA’s William R. Johnson Coliseum. JMU dropped its sixth straight contest to stand at 2-8 on the season.

Jabari Peters capped a career-high 21-point effort with a three-pointer with 11 seconds remaining to lift Sam Houston State to a 77-76 victory over James Madison in the opening game of the E-Tech Lumberjack Classic on Friday night at Stephen F. Austin’s William Johnson Coliseum.
