As part of its mission to serve area writers, filmmakers, artists and performers, the Waynesboro Cultural Commission announces the second in its series of informal workshops. The romance writers’ workshops, scheduled for the first two Tuesdays in May, will introduce the genre and give aspiring authors the skills to understand the expectations of this popular fictional form.

It’s the highest single-game hit total allowed by a team in the Carolina League this season. Ross Heffley hit his first home run of the year for Lynchburg and drove in three runs to pace the Hillcats offense.

In a game that was played in a steady mist throughout the night, the Cavaliers (39-8) recorded 14 hits while eight of their nine position starters earned at least one hit.

The fifth-ranked Virginia baseball was swept by Virginia Tech in a doubleheader Saturday at English Field in Blacksburg, falling 5-3 in the opener and 11-6 in the nightcap. UVa (38-8, 17-7 ACC) lost both games in an ACC doubleheader for the first time since April 6, 2008, at Florida State, and the Cavaliers lost just their second conference series of the season as the Hokies (27-18, 11-13) took two of three games.

The New Britain Rock Cats (11-10) overtook the Richmond Flying Squirrels (10-12) and grabbed a series-opening, 7-4, victory in front of 3,474 at New Britain Stadium on Friday night. The loss drops the Flying Squirrels to 1-7 away from The Diamond on the year.

The Salem Red Sox scored the final seven runs to win their third straight over the Wilmington Blue Rocks, taking three out of four in the series with a 7-3 triumph on Thursday night. Mike Augliera tossed seven strong innings to improve to 3-0 on the year, while the offense erupted late to overcome the early three-run deficit. Sean Coyle homered for the second straight night, while Garin Cecchini continued his red-hot stretch by reaching base three times.
