Gov. Bob McDonnell today announced Red Sun Farms, a producer of high-quality hydroponic vegetables, will invest a total of $30 million to establish its first U.S. high-technology greenhouse production operation in Pulaski County. The company will erect climate controlled greenhouses on 45 acres of land in the New River Valley Commerce Park to grow quality greenhouse grown vegetables, creating 205 new jobs within five years. Virginia successfully competed against Tennessee for the project.

Gov. Bob McDonnell today updated the Commonwealth’s response to the recent winter storm that struck Virginia, and the impact the storm had on the state. The storm claimed three lives, two due to automobile accidents and one due to a falling tree. At its peak the storm cut electrical service to approximately 370,000 customers, but electric crews continue to make fast progress in restoration efforts with outages now down to less than 100,000 connections. Dominion Virginia Power estimates that 95 percent of its remaining outages will be restored by Friday evening at the latest.
Bridgewater College will officially dedicate an electric-vehicle charging station that is believed to be one of only a few at a Virginia college. College officials and local legislators will perform a ribbon cutting March 19 at 9:30 a.m. in the Stone Village parking lot. The public is invited to attend.

Tim Kaine, a member of the Senate Armed Services and Budget Committees, today discussed the impact of sequestration and continued budget uncertainty on Virginia and the nation’s military readiness during a hearing with General James N. Mattis, Commander of U.S. Central Command, and Admiral William H. McRaven, Commander of U.S. Special Operations Command. The hearing follows Kaine’s visit to the Pentagon yesterday to meet with Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, Deputy Secretary of Defense Ash Carter, Chief of Staff of the Army Ray Odierno, and employees of the Department of Defense.

The discussions covered the 90,000 civilian employees at the Department of Defense who will be furloughed, reductions to military base operations across the Commonwealth and delays in training and deployments that could decrease readiness. Kaine also spent time talking with civilian employees at the Pentagon about the effects of announced furloughs.
A major storm will bring heavy snow from parts of North Carolina to portions of West Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey spanning Wednesday into Thursday.
In keeping with the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, WTA’s Gateway has engaged award-winning storyteller, Lynn Ruehlmann to perform her tale of Civil War spies. The performance will be at 7 pm at WTA’s Gateway, 329 West Main Street on Friday, February 22. The program will feature the stories of Elizabeth Van Lew and Rose O’Neal Greenhow who used their wiles and skills to secure information for opposite sides in the war. Each story is a fascinating look at the role of women in the conflict that split the nation.
