The No. 3 Virginia women’s soccer team hits the road this weekend to kick off a four-match road swing that begins at NC State on Friday night at 7 p.m.

The Cavaliers (8-1-1, 2-1-0 ACC) are coming off a 1-0 shutout victory over No. 19 Duke on Sunday with junior Alexis Shaffer (Cary, N.C.) delivering the game-winning goal for Virginia. The victory got the Cavaliers back into the win column after dropping the first match of the season earlier in the week to No. 6 Notre Dame, 2-1 in double overtime.
Virginia enters the weekend contest with the Wolfpack boasting one of the most prolific offenses in the nation, ranking second nationally with 3.30 goals per game and have scored at least two goals in eight of 10 matches played this year.
Junior Morgan Reuther (Chantilly, Va.) leads the Cavalier offense with six goals scored this season and is one of 12 players to score a goal. She has one of the team’s two hat tricks, scoring all three goals in a 3-0 victory over Harvard. Junior Meghan Cox (Springfield, Va.) is the other Cavalier with a hat trick this season and has tallied four goals on the season. Junior Alexis Shaffer (Cary, N.C.) scored the game-winner against Duke and is second in goals (5) and leads the team with 14 points.
The Cavaliers have also done well distributing the ball with 13 players posting an assist this season. Senior Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.) is the team leader in assists with six on the year and is closing in on the school record for assists in a career. Doniak has 135 points in her career, three shy of the record 138 set by Angela Hucles in 1999. Doniak is also seven goals shy of the career mark set by Hucles that same season.
Junior Morgan Stearns (San Antonio, Texas) has started the last two matches in goal for the Cavaliers, posting the shutout against Duke. She has combined with fellow junior Jessie Ferrari (Fairfax, Va.) for six shutouts this season.
The Wolfpack (4-8-0, 0-3-0 ACC) enters the weekend coming off back-to-back home losses, the most recent loss a 1-0 decision against Boston College. NC State has not scored a goal yet in conference play and has only one goal in its eight losses. Jackie Stengel leads the way with four of the 10 goals scored this season by the Wolfpack.
Up next for the Cavaliers are matches at No. 6 Clemson on Thursday, Oct. 8 and at Wake Forest on Sunday, Oct. 11.
