UVa. women fall to #25 UNC in 2 OTs

Virginia dropped a 78-73 double-overtime contest to No. 25 North Carolina Thursday (Jan. 5) at John Paul Jones Arena. Cavalier sophomore guard Ataira Franklin (Bowie, Md.) scored a career-high 29 points and added nine boards to lead UVa in scoring and rebounding.

With the loss, Virginia dropped to 12-4 overall and 0-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. North Carolina handed UVa its first home loss of the season and improved to 12-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Franklin was 9-of-25 from the field and 9-of-9 from the free throw line. She connected on two 3-pointers and also added five steals.

Senior guard Ariana Moorer (Woodbridge, Va.) netted 15points – her 14th-consecutive double-digit scoring effort. Moorer also had five steals and seven assists.

Chelsea Shine (Wayne, Pa.) chipped in 10 points and six rebounds for UVa, while Simone Egwu (Odenton, Md.) had a solid effort with six points and five rebounds. Lexie Gerson (Fort Washington, Pa.), starting herfourth-consecutive game for an injured China Crosby (New York, N.Y.), finished with eight points, five rebounds and four steals.

Prior to the game, it was announced that Crosby will miss the remainder of the 2011-12 season with a knee injury.

Chay Shegog led North Carolina with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

The Tar Heels out-scored the Cavaliers 9-4 in the second overtime, including three free throws in the final 17 seconds.

Moorer forced overtime by making an acrobatic layup with 18.8 seconds, tying the score at 57-57. North Carolina was unable to get off a shot on its final possession.

Moorer missed a close range runner as time expired in the first overtime.

North Carolina shot 47 percent (27-of-57) from the field and held a 48-37 advantage in rebounding.

UVa continues ACC play on the road on Saturday, Jan. 8, at Clemson at 2 p.m.
