The bid by UVA junior Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) for back-to-back NCAA singles titles ended in the NCAA quarterfinals at this year’s championship on Saturday (May 23) at the Hurd Tennis Center.
No. 7 seed Jamie Loeb of North Carolina defeated UVa’s Collins 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 in a quarterfinal match that was moved indoors due to inclement weather. Collins, who became the first NCAA singles champion in Virginia women’s tennis history last season, went 3-1 during this year’s championship. In addition, Collins won 16 of her last 17 matches and ended the season 26-6.
Collins’ title defense was impressive as she defeated No. 19 Taylor Davidson (Stanford), No. 31 Ronit Yurovsky (Michigan) and No. 47 Jennifer Brady (UCLA) before losing to Loeb at the championship in Waco. Brady is also ranked No. 209 in the WTA rankings, the highest among all women’s collegiate tennis players.
