UR loses Corp for season

University of Richmond head football coach Latrell Scott announced Monday that junior starting QB Aaron Corp will undergo season-ending knee surgery this week after sustaining the injury on the first offensive series in Saturday’s game at New Hampshire.

“This is a tough situation for Aaron and our team and we wish Aaron the best as he recovers,” said Scott. “But this season is far from over. I really like the fight our guys showed Saturday in a hostile environment and we have to keep that mentality this weekend at Massachusetts.”

Corp, who transferred from Southern California in the offseason, beat out returning sophomore John Laub for the starting job in Training Camp. Laub was unavailable Saturday as he continues to recover from an injury suffered in Week Four versus Delaware and is out through at least this week.

Corp did not return after sustaining the injury. Third-string QB Nick Hicks, who is Richmond’s starting punter, played the remainder of the game.

Hicks will be listed as the starter for Richmond’s game Saturday at No. 8 Massachusetts, with true freshman Montel White (Surry County, Va.) as the back-up.

Even before Corp went down, seven Spiders who would have been in uniform at New Hampshire were not because of injuries. Out were RB Jovan Smith, WR Donte Boston, DE Kerry Wynn, DT Casey Cooley, S Darryl Hamilton, OL Kevin Westervelt and Laub. Additionally, WRs Kevin Grayson, Tre Gray and Jon Thompson, LB Patrick Weldon and DT Corey Jackson have been hampered by injuries this season.

Richmond, which has made four-consecutive playoff appearances and won the 2008 National Championship, is 2-3 overall, 0-2 in CAA Football play. Four of the Spiders’ final six regular-season opponents are ranked in the Top 10.
