The United Way of Greater Augusta is hosting its first Global Youth Service Day Saturday, April 24 from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Kicking off the weekend will be a party Friday evening, April 23 at Waynesboro Solid Rock Café from 6:30-9 p.m. All area youth are invited to attend.

The United Way is partnering with the Central Shenandoah Office On Youth, the Waynesboro Family YMCA, Rebuilding Together and the Staunton Community Garden to provide an even greater impact in our community.

Global Youth Service Day is an acknowledgment of the energy, effort and volunteer service that many young people give to their schools, churches, and communities all year. Global Youth Service Day is the largest service event in the world. It aims to mobilize youth to identify and address the needs of the community through service, recruit the next generation of volunteers, and educate the public about the year-round contributions of young people as community leaders.

The United Way Global Youth Service Day is a community service event in which student groups from area high schools and church youth groups participate by completing a project that improves the community. This year students will be completing projects at six different sites – graffiti cleanup and community garden in Staunton; graffiti cleanup in Waynesboro, Waynesboro YMCA project, and two Rebuilding Together home modification projects.

The kick-off party Friday night will be a fun event with live music, free food, and opportunity to hear how other youth have become engaged in their community. Signup sheets will be on hand for choosing a Saturday project.

For those participating in Waynesboro projects, the meeting site is the Waynesboro Solid Rock Café, Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. Staunton volunteers will meet at the Booker T Washington building at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
