Turks tag Waynesboro, 13-2, tightening race for playoff spot

wlogo2Harrisonburg scored six runs in the first and coasted to an easy 13-2 win over Waynesboro on Wednesday night.

The loss was the second of the day for the Generals, who dropped a 4-3 decision at home to Covington earlier on Wednesday. Covington won its second game of the day at Rockbridge, 7-4 in 10 innings, and climbed to within a game and a half of Waynesboro for the fourth and final playoff spot in the South Division.

Waynesboro did briefly lead in the game at Harrisonburg, scoring a run in the first inning when Tyler Bocock (sophomore, Stetson) came in from third on a wild pitch by Turks starter Connor Kaden. Quinn Griffith (junior, Salisbury) struck out with runners on second and third and two outs to end that threat.

Harrisonburg answered in its half of the first with a sixspot, keyed by a two-out, three-run double by Joe Napolitano.

Generals hurler Bryce Danielson (sophomore, Western Carolina), making his second start of the season, took the proverbial one for the team, playing its second doubleheader of three in an eight-day span, giving up 12 runs, nine of the runs earned, in three innings of work.

Waynesboro returns home Thursday to host Rockbridge. The game is the WSVA Waynesboro Generals Game of the Week. First pitch is at 7 p.m. The pregame show with host Chris Graham begins at 6:30 p.m.
