Staunton defeats Waynesboro in 13, 7-5

wlogo2Staunton broke open a tie ballgame with a threespot in the 13th inning, and Blake Sipe robbed JoJo Woods of a game-tying two-run single with a diving catch in the bottom half of the inning to preserve a 7-5 Braves win Saturday night.

Generals starting pitcher Terrance Dedrick (junior, Auburn) struck out nine in five innings of work in his second start of the season, but left ahead only 4-3 due to a fifth-inning error by shortstop Tyler Bocock (sophomore, Stetson) that allowed Staunton to score two unearned runs in that frame.

The margin stayed there until the eighth, when the Braves pushed across a run on an RBI fielder’s choice by Quinn Bower, who beat a throw to first on a double-play attempt by the Generals, allowing Jason Morozowski to score from third base with the tying run.

It would stay knotted up at 4 until the 13th, when an error and a wild pitch opened the floodgates for the big inning by the Braves.

Trailing 7-4 heading into the bottom of the 13th, Waynesboro was able to get the tying runs in scoring position with Woods batting with two down. The Central Florida junior took a 3-1 pitch from Chris Huffman to right field for an apparent base hit on a sinking line drive that appeared to drop in front of a diving Sipe, but the umpiring crew ruled that Sipe caught the ball for the game’s final out.

The loss, Waynesboro’s second in a row in as many nights to Staunton, drops the Generals to two games under .500 at 15-17 with 12 games to go in the 2013 regular season.
