waynesboro2editsA Waynesboro Police Department patrol vehicle and another vehicle were involved in a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of West Main Street and Arch Avenue at 7 p.m. Friday.

The 27-year-old officer was driving a 2011 Ford Crown Victoria and collided with a 2003 Hyundai Accent driven by a 71-year-old Crozet citizen. Neither driver was named in a media release from the Waynesboro PD. There were no other occupants in either vehicle. Both drivers were taken by ambulance to Augusta Health Emergency Department where the officer was treated and released.  The other driver’s condition is not known.

The officer was responding to Mountain View Apartments for a report of a domestic assault involving an armed assailant.  The patrol vehicle was traveling north on Arch Avenue when it struck the Hyundai broadside.  The Hyundai was traveling west on Main Street.  The impact sent the Hyundai into the Waynesboro Visitor’s Center located at 301 W. Main St.

Other officers were able to get to the scene of the domestic disturbance but the suspect had already fled.  He was arrested three hours later on two counts of brandishing a firearm and one count of assault & battery on a family member.

The intersection was closed for nearly three hours while the Police Department investigated the accident.  The Virginia State Police are assisting with the investigation.  Damages to both vehicles are estimated at approximately $20,000.

The crash remains under investigation.
