Virginia had a new starting quarterback, but got the same old result on Saturday, as the ‘Hoos didn’t respond to four second-half Duke touchdowns in an ugly 42-17 loss in Durham on Saturday.
For the second straight week, UVa. outgained its opponent in total offense while coming up short on the scoreboard. Last week, the Cavs gained 625 yards on offense in a 44-38 loss to Louisiana Tech. This week, the Virginia offense outgained Duke 461 yards to 394 yards, but as was the case last week, things tended to break down at the worst possible time.
Alabama transfer Phillip Sims threw two interceptions in his first career start, and Drew Jarrett missed two second-half field-goal attempts when the outcome of the game was still in doubt.
Sims finished the day on the bench after landing awkwardly on his right shoulder on a fourth-quarter tackle. He was 21-of-42 passing for 268 yards.
Duke sophomore Anthony Boone was brilliant in his first career start, throwing for 212 yards and four touchdowns against an overmatched Virginia secondary.
The loss was the fourth in a row for Virginia after a 2-0 start.
