Paramount Theater to host ‘Downton Abbey’ premiere

WVPT Public Television and The Paramount Theater will co-host a “Downton Abbey” Season Three Premiere Party on Sunday, Jan. 6th, 2013, with a simulcast of the program, free and open to the public, beginning at 9 p.m.

In the wake of last season’s wildly successful outing centered around Masterpiece Mystery’s “Sherlock” series, WVPT and The Paramount will turn their New Year’s focus to the long-awaited third season of the series the New York Times named “an instant classic,” and the Wall Street Journal pegged “impossible to resist.”

A reception and fundraiser will be held at 7 p.m., offering proper, period cocktails and very English hors d’oeuvres, as well as a lecture by Gweneth West, Professor and Head of Costume Design at the University of Virginia, and Curator of UVA’s Collection of Historic Dress.  Autographed copies of To Marry An English Lord,by Carol Wallace and Gail MacColl, and which Downton’s creator Julian Fellowes called “marvelous and entertaining,” will be awarded to one man and one woman deemed to be best-costumed of the evening. Tickets for the reception are $50 and proceeds will benefit the missions of both non-profit organizations.

Downton fans in Central Virginia have long waited with their compatriots world-wide for the upcoming season, which opens just as the Great War has ended, promising intrigue, murder, fortunes at risk, and lovers at bay as we re-meet our favorite characters upstairs and down at Downton. The season kicks off with the arrival of Martha Levinson from Long Island, played by the fabulous Shirley MacLaine against Maggie Smith’s beloved and inimitable Dowager countess, in a sparks-and-barbs relationship that The Huffington Post calls “the best frenemies of 1920.”

Tickets are available at 434.979.1333, at www.theparamount.net, and through the Paramount Box Office. Box Office hours are Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
