One dead in single-vehicle crash in Augusta County

policeVirginia State Police Trooper T.L. Johnson is investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash in Augusta County. The crash occurred Friday (July 22) at 7:40 p.m. on Interstate 81 at the 207 mile marker.

A 1995 Jeep Wrangler was traveling north on Interstate 81 when it ran off the right side of the interstate. The driver overcorrected causing the Jeep to cross over the northbound lanes, run off the left side of I-81, strike a ditch and overturn several times in the median.

The driver, Ann C. Gibson, 46, of Fairfax, Va., was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the Jeep. She died at the scene.

Two passengers, Glen A. Cooper, 42, and Kiernan Green, 15, were both transported to UVA Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Both male passengers were wearing seat belts.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
