interstate 81Virginia State Police Trooper J.D. Cash responded Monday to a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 81 in Augusta County. The crash occurred in the northbound lanes at the 227 mile marker.

According to witnesses, two vehicles were racing each other through northbound traffic on Interstate 81 in excess of 100 mph. At one point, a Nissan passed traffic on the right shoulder. As it tried to merge back into the northbound travel lane, the driver lost control. The vehicle spun across I-81 and ran off the left side of the interstate into the median, went up an embankment and overturned multiple times. Its driver was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. The adult male was not wearing a seat belt.

The other vehicle involved the racing continued on I-81. The Nissan never made contact with any vehicles.

State police are still in the process of notifying next of kin. The crash remains under investigation.
