Nelson County man charged in attempted carjacking of cab in Waynesboro

Chris Graham

Taylor, Patrick WayneThe Waynesboro Police Department arrested a Nelson County man after a bizarre situation in which he attacked the driver of a cab that he was a passenger.  He then attempted to steal the vehicle, which is registered to ABC Cab in Harrisonburg.  The Sunday evening incident led to several charges against Patrick Wayne Taylor, 23 years old of Lovingston.

On Sunday at approximately 6:00 p.m., officers responded to the intersection of West Broad Street and North Wayne Avenue for a report of disturbance in a vehicle.  When they arrived, they found Taylor behind the wheel of the cab attempting to engage the vehicle.  The 54 year old male driver told them that Taylor attacked him while he was driving them to Nelson County and he stopped the vehicle in Waynesboro to escape.  Officers were able to remove a highly intoxicated Taylor from the vehicle and detain him.

According to the victim, he picked up Taylor and his cousin at the Tilted Kilt in Harrisonburg with instructions to take them to Lovingston.  Taylor passed out shortly after the ride began.  After about thirty-five minutes, Taylor awoke and for no reason put the victim in a choke hold while he was driving.   The victim and Taylor’s cousin tried to fend him off and after a brief struggle the victim was able to stop the vehicle and escape.  Taylor then got in the driver’s seat but couldn’t get the vehicle in gear.  Officers attempted to put Taylor through DUI field sobriety tests but he was too intoxicated to perform them safely.  He was arrested at the scene.

Taylor faces the following charges:

  • Attempted Carjacking (f)
  • Assault & Battery (m)
  • DUI 2nd Offense in 5 years (m)
  • Refusal of a Breath Test (m)

He is being held without bond at Middle River Regional Jail.
