Life is full of little, ordinary bits of beauty which frequently go unnoticed and unappreciated. Using her cameras and editing software, photographer and artist Deb Booth of Waynesboro gets up-close and personal with blossoms and blooms, tweaking and crafting her images to bring out something hidden from first glance – oft-times completely changing the dominant focus of the original shot.
By enlarging a macro image of a tiny bloom, she creates a new world of visual imagery and emotion, often evoking viewers’ comments, “I never noticed that before!”
She’s also mesmerized by the constantly-shifting patterns and shadows of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, so her work shifts from a focus on the minute to trying to capture the glory of the majestic expanses surrounding her. Lately, she’s begun to work with fractal art – art that is based on repeating patterns. These occur often in nature – the center of a sunflower, or a nautilus shell, for example. Booth sees her world in a different light – and will share that vision during her upcoming two-month exhibit as featured artist at OASIS in Harrisonburg.
In the music world, a singer will do their own version of a song made famous by someone else, and that work is called a “cover.” The way she sees it, Booth does covers of some of nature’s greatest hits
Her work is part of the permanent collection of The Francis J. Carrier Arboretum at James Madison University in Virginia, as well as in various art galleries throughout the state, including Valley Green Gallery in Nellysford, Celebrate!, Sacred Circle and Turtle Lane in Staunton, The Warehouse Art Gallery in Luray, the Rooftop of Virginia in Galax, and the Cultural Arts Center of Glen Allen.
Through March and April 2011, Booth’s colorful, eye-pleasing art will be featured on the exhibit wall at the rear of the OASIS Gallery, and will include large canvas gallery wraps featuring majestic landscapes, blooms less-than an inch big, and everything in-between. Size matters, but not as much as the vision to see what lies before one – and Booth brings her vision, creativity, whimsy, photography and digital art into making those visions real for her viewers, as well as herself.
