Morton offers free-market alternatives to health-care reform

I am deeply upset over the sweetheart deals that have been cut by the Senate’s Democratic leadership. At a time in our history when millions of American people are crying out for their voices to be heard around this great nation, our leaders are cutting back room deals with individual senators.

The most recent is Sen. Nelson of Nebraska, who has bartered the 60th vote for Obamacare in exchange for a guarantee that Nebraska will not have to make up any additional Medicaid cost from new recipients after 2017. This leaves Virginia and other states to foot the bill for additional cost to Nebraska.

Where in the Constitution does Harry Reid get the right to barter away costs state by state?

If Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid can do this, then our senators, Jim Webb and Mark Warner, should request that Virginia and all other states have the same safety net as Nebraska. Maybe Sen. Nelson’s hesitation to support federalized health care without this guarantee is an indicator of the hidden risks and costs that are in this deficit-ridden bill.

Independent studies have determined federal health care, as it has been presented, will cost the citizens of America not less than $2.5 trillion over the next 10 years. The revenue to support this program does not exist and will require new debt that our children and grandchildren will have to pay. Similarly, the rapid expansion of America’s debt has contributed to the nation’s recent financial decline. The value of the dollar is declining, and investment needed to create jobs is stagnant. New debt will only darken the hopes of returning to the prosperous America we all love.

Those supporting the health-care bill anticipate that the grassroots efforts to stop the bill will cease with the arrival of the holidays. I ask you to call each of our senators and ask five others to do the same. Call on them to vote against government-run health care and listen to those they represent. Let them look you in the eye and tell you that what they are supporting is the will of the people while you are standing there. Let them know that you are keeping track and you will not forget when they are up for election and that they will be removed from office for making this vote against the will of the people.

The 10th Amendment states, “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to States, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.” There is no room in this language for what is going on in Washington today.

It is time to take this country back and we must not grow weary with well doing at this critical point in history. Our America is on the line, and liberty is threatened by our own elected representatives. Call your senators and congressman and ask them to represent you.
