Waynesboro General Patrick Mazeika and Virginia’s Joe McCarthy have been named to the first team of the 2013 Baseball America Freshman All-America Team, announced Monday by Baseball America.
Both Mazeika and McCarthy were also honored on the Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger and NCBWA Freshman All-America teams.
Mazeika (freshman, Stetson) hit .382 with three homers, 33 RBI and a .488 on-base percentage.
McCarthy finished third on the UVa. team with a .336 batting average and ranked second with a .469 on base percentage.
He racked up 75 hits, including four home runs, and drove in 51 runs in 60 games. McCarthy reached base safely in 56 games and ranked fifth among all freshmen nationally in on base percentage. He tied a school record with 54 walks, ranking fourth in the ACC and sixth nationally in that category.
