educationGovernor Terry McAuliffe announced Monday a state partnership aimed at recognizing the Commonwealth’s dedicated teachers.  The Virginia Lottery, the Virginia Tourism Corporation and the Virginia PTA are partnering to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week (May 2-6) by pledging to thank as many Virginia K-12 teachers as possible for their hard work.

“Every day, educators from across the Commonwealth are providing our young people with the world class education they need to be successful, and these teachers deserve our gratitude,” Governor McAuliffe said. “My Administration is proud to support this unique partnership designed to recognize our teachers and their relentless commitment to educating and inspiring young Virginians.”

The “Thank a Teacher” campaign encourages the public to participate by sending thank-you notes to K-12 school teachers they value, beginning today and ending on May 6. Qualifying teachers who receive a thank-you note can enter a drawing for a chance to win a memorable Virginia vacation through a partnership with the Virginia Tourism Corporation.

“Our teachers deserve our respect, our support and our admiration,” Secretary of Education Anne Holton said. “Our educators are true agents of change in our schools, and this state partnership will allow citizens in every corner of the Commonwealth to let teachers know just how much they contribute to our shared community.”

To kick off the campaign, Secretary Holton will take part in a press conference at Westover Hills Elementary tomorrow in Richmond. First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe with take part in a similar press conference at Mack Benn Jr. Elementary in Suffolk later next week.

“Because all Virginia Lottery profits benefit K-12 public education, we are fortunate to meet many teachers and observe their hard work,” said Virginia Lottery Executive Director Paula Otto. “If you know amazing teachers in Virginia, join us and say ‘thanks’ – for making a difference for our children, our communities and our Commonwealth.”

Postcard notes are available through participating PTA chapters, all Virginia Lottery Customer Service Centers, and thank-you note writing stations at select Virginia Lottery retailers. Digital thank-you notes and more information about the writing station locations across the state are available at www.valottery.com/thankateacher.
