Longwood University dropped an 89-53 non-conference men’s basketball decision on the road at No. 21 Georgetown University of the Big East on Monday night at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.
The Lancers (2-7) were led by redshirt-sophomore Jeylani Dublin|Brooklyn, New York with 11 points and six rebounds. The nationally-ranked Hoyas (8-1) were led by Otto Porter Jr. with a game-high 22 points and Markel Starks with 17 points. Longwood will return home to host Division III Southern Virginia University on Thursday night, December 13, at Willett Hall in Farmville at 7 p.m.
Longwood scored the first basket of the game as Dublin converted a layup at 19:27 and was fouled, but missed the free throw. Georgetown, however, scored the next nine points to lead 9-2 at 17:17. The Lancers were within 15-10 at 9:30 after a pair of free throws from junior captain Tristan Carey|Colonial Beach, but the Hoyas took control with a 23-8 run to lead 38-18 at 2:48, as Starks (nine) and Porter (seven) combined for 16 of the 23 points. It was 40-24 at the intermission after LU scored six of the final eight points during the opening period.
Georgetown scored the first two baskets of the second half to extend the lead back to 20 points at 44-24 with 19:13 remaining. A three-point field goal by Carey made it 44-27 at 18:17, but Longwood would get no closer. The Hoyas maintained a margin of at least 27 points over the final 15:56, taking their largest lead at 89-51 with just 16-seconds left to play. The Lancers played all 12 players in uniform, and nine scored points, while GU played all 14 players in uniform, and 11 scored points for the hosts.
“Georgetown is obviously a very good team, and our turning the ball over to give them easy scoring chances only exacerbated matters tonight,” said 10th-year head coach Mike Gillian. “These game experiences against teams that are highly ranked nationally are going to help us in the long run. They clearly define areas we need to be much better in to be the team we are capable of being.”
Dublin led Longwood with his 11 points and six rebounds. Freshman Michael Kessens|Nyon, Switzerland contributed 10 points and five rebounds for the Lancers before fouling out with nearly 10 minutes to play. Carey finished with nine points, five rebounds and three assists. LU shot 44.4% (20-45) from the field, including 33.3% (3-9) on three-pointers, and 66.7% (10-15) at the free throw line.
Porter Jr. led Georgetown with his game-high 22 points, adding game-highs of seven assists and four steals. Starks had 17 points for the Hoyas. GU shot 53.7% (36-67) from the field, including 30.0% (6-20) on three-pointers, and 57.9% (11-19) at the line. The hosts forced 30 Longwood turnovers that were converted into 47 points, and enjoyed an advantage of 50-20 in points scored in the paint.
Longwood and Georgetown were meeting for the first time in the sport of men’s basketball.
