Localized flooding closes Whiteoak Canyon area trails in Shenandoah National Park

Contributors

ShenandoahLogo_Outlined_Black_VerticalFor the safety of the visiting public, Shenandoah National Park has closed the Whiteoak Canyon area trails and parking area due to flooding from the high amount of rainfall over the last few days.

Since Monday, the Park has received 8.8 inches of rain in some areas, resulting in localized flooding of trails and roads. Weather forecasts are predicting a significant amount of rainfall over the next several days with the potential to cause additional flooding.

This closure affects the Whiteoak Canyon parking lot (off of Berry Hollow road, route 600), and the Whiteoak Canyon and Cedar Run trails. The closure will remain in effect until further notice.

Hikers in all locations in Shenandoah National Park should use extreme caution over the next several days.  Streams may be higher than normal and stream crossings could be treacherous.  Before departing for the Park check for weather updates, and check the Park’s Facebook page, website (www.nps.gov/shen) or Twitter feeds for potential closures in additional locations.
