You can thank ACC Network, known for ads hawking Gorilla Tape and The Ellipse, for tonight’s Virginia-Hampton game getting a mid-week 9 p.m. ET tip-off.

I’ll be there, because it’s better being there than not, but it would be easier if it was Duke or UNC on the other bench.

Hampton (1-1) was competitive last week with Milwaukee – not the one with Giannis Antetokounmpo; the one in the Horizon League.

ESPNBet has the ‘Hoos as a 24.5-point favorite, over/under at 148.5, so, the final score would be expected to be around 87-62 UVA based on those numbers.

Game Coverage

Nice, intimate setting

Hardly anybody here. Record cold temperatures, 9 p.m. tip, Hampton.

I know that TV rules the roost and tells us what to do, but how does ACCN make a dime on this one, much less UVA Athletics?

Color guard?

Fourth home game of the young season (including the exhibition with ‘Nova): no color guards on the floor for the pregame.

As my colleague, Scott German, points out: not even for Veterans Day?

First media timeout: UVA 7-4, 15:30/1st

Two turnovers on the first six possessions. Here we go again.

Three scores and one other empty trip.

Sam Lewis with a corner three and two free throws on a drive.

Second media timeout: UVA 16-8, 11:37/1st

Chance Mallory has an early seven – a three and a four-point play.

Four turnovers on 12 possessions.

Otherwise, 3-of-5 from three, 1-of-1 at the rim, 1-of-2 on paint twos.

Third media timeout: UVA 25-14, 8:24/1st

No turnovers in the past seven offensive possessions, and Virginia has made six of its last seven.

Ugonna Onyenso has a dunk and a three – the three on a screen for Chance Mallory, who dribble-drove to the rim and kicked it back out to the top of the key for the open look.

Hampton timeout: UVA 31-14, 6:51/1st

Virginia is 6-of-11 from three. No TOs in the past nine possessions.

Fourth media timeout: UVA 37-17, 3:43/1st

Virginia is 13-of-22 from the field overall, 6-of-11 from three, 4-of-5 at the rim, three other paint jumpers.

Tempo: 54 pace. Somehow.

Half: UVA 47, Hampton 19

Virginia has 47 points on 29 offensive possessions. Slower pace than the TB era.

Shooting: 16-of-26 FG, 7-of-12 3FG, 6-of-8 at the rim.

Ugonna Onyenso has 12 points (5-of-6 FG, 2-of-3 3FG), six rebounds, three blocks.

Reminder: Onyenso had attempted a total of one three in three seasons at Kentucky and Kansas State before this season.

The offense had four turnovers in its first nine possessions, then three in its final 20 of the half.

Got our answer on the color guard

Answer: the government shutdown.

No outside-facing engagements.

Huh.

First media timeout: UVA 58-24, 16:12/2nd

Virginia is 3-of-5 from three in the first section of the second half.

Third media timeout: UVA 82-42, 7:07/2nd

This is a nice bounceback from the lackluster performance against NC Central.

The 82 stands out, but the 42 impresses me more.

Final: UVA 91, Hampton 53

Virginia rolls past Hampton, 91-53, behind 18 points and 10 rebounds from Ugonna Onyenso, and 16 points from Chance Mallory.

Better performance on both ends from the 81-62 win over NC Central on Friday night.

UVA shot 55 percent (33-of-60) and was 11-of-22 from three – after shooting 8-of-30 from three in the opener against Rider, and 14-of-36 in the NCCU game.

Defensively, the ‘Hoos held Hampton to 31.7 percent shooting, and 6-of-26 from three.
