The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the City of Lexington will dedicate newly completed pedestrian-access improvements on North Main Street (Route 11 Business).
A ribbon cutting for the improvements will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 27, 2025 at Virginia Military Institute’s (VMI) Corps Physical Training Facility, 329 North Main Street, Lexington. Virginia Transportation Secretary W. Sheppard “Shep” Miller III and representatives from the City of Lexington and VDOT will be in attendance.
The North Main Street project improves pedestrian and bicycle access between Massie Street and Hook Lane. The six-block section of roadway serves as the city’s northern gateway, passing through the VMI Post and conveying users to downtown Lexington.
Existing sidewalk on the east side of North Main Street has been widened by five feet to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). On-street parking on the west side of the roadway has been replaced by a four-foot-wide bicycle lane. The SMART SCALE-funded project also replaced underground utilities while enhancing multimodal connectivity with the nearby Chessie Trail and Washington & Lee University.
