Former Virginia U.S. Sen. Jim Webb is reportedly considering a run for president as an independent.
The Webb campaign said in a statement that Webb will hold a news conference on Tuesday at the National Press Club in Washington to discuss “his candidacy, the campaign and his views of the political parties in the current election cycle.”
Webb served as a United States senator from 2007-2013. He stepped aside from running for re-election after his one term in the Senate, opening the door for former Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, who won the seat in 2012, defeating former governor and senator George Allen, whom Webb had upset in 2006.
Webb surprised many Virginia observers when reports surfaced in 2014 that he was considering a run for the Democratic Party presidential nomination.
His campaign has failed to gain traction in the polls to date. Most polls have his support in the area of 1 to 2 percent among Democratic Party voters.
Webb has also failed to gain traction among campaign donors, raising less than $700,000. Frontrunner Hillary Clinton has raised more than $77 million to date for her campaign, for sake of comparison.
The Webb candidacy has had but one memorable moment to date. Unfortunately for Webb, it was him arguing with CNN news host Anderson Cooper over the lack of time he was given to speak in the first Democratic Party presidential debate last week, which was lampooned on Saturday Night Live over the weekend with Webb portrayed by SNL favorite Alec Baldwin, and even that was upstaged by the portrayal of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders by Seinfeld co-creator Larry David.
