I got a letter from the DMV the other day

Stop the Presses column by Chris Graham

I’m not going to write one of those cliche columns on how much it sucks to have to go to the DMV.

Not gonna do it.

I’m above that.

I mean, it does suck. Don’t get me wrong.

I had to wait 20 minutes the other day just to hand a lady a piece of paper.

Which really …

I said I wasn’t going to write one of those cliche columns, and here I’m doing it.

I’ll stop now.

Ahem.

Feels better.

What I wanted to write was one of those columns that should be written about the DMV.

Namely, the kind asking the question, Why doesn’t whoever runs the DMV join the rest of us in the 21st century?

I mentioned above that I had to wait 20 minutes the other day just to hand a lady a piece of paper.

Hello! Couldn’t I have taken care of this kind of thing in about a minute and 10 seconds online?

Why wasn’t that option there for me?

Wouldn’t that be cheaper than having an office staff of 10 with eight of them on break at any one time and having literally 50 angry people seething out in the makeshift auditorums that we, the taxpayers, have to pay to light and heat and the rest?

Seems to me that we’re basically burning money at the DMV – in stacks of twenties, even.

So if somebody could print a copy of this column and get a carrier pigeon to get it to the person who runs the DMV, I dunno, maybe we can get something moving here.
