wlogo2Quinn Griffith singled through the left side to score Brian Beard with the winning run as the Waynesboro Generals defeated Front Royal, 4-3, in 10 innings Tuesday night.

Beard (freshman, Old Dominion) had started the 10th inning off with a single to left off John Houston (0-3). Anthony Iacomini (junior, Cortland State) bunted Beard to second. Pinch-hitter Roger Gonzalez (freshman, Miami) was intentionally walked to put runners at first and second with one out for Griffith, who singled on the first pitch to left field, allowing Beard to score the winning run.

Josh Thorne (freshman, Stetson) picked up the win in relief to improve to 2-0 on the season, throwing two and a third innings of scoreless relief. Taylor Sandefur (junior, Western Carolina) put in a solid start, going six innings, giving up two runs on two hits, striking out two and walking one. Sandefur has given up just four earned runs in his last 20 innings.

Griffith (junior, Salisbury) had three hits in five at bats to pace Waynesboro’s nine-hit attack. Griffith is hitting .368 in the past seven days to raise his season average to .273.

The win improves Waynesboro to 9-10 on the season and pulls the Generals to within three and a half games of first-place Harrisonburg, a 3-2 loser to Charles Town on Tuesday.

Waynesboro travels to Staunton on Wednesday before returning home on Thursday for a doubleheader with the Covington Lumberjacks. Game one is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., with game two scheduled for 7 p.m.
