Generals, Rebels avoid tragedy, but Rebel Park damaged in Friday storm

Contributors

Rebel Park in New Market sustained serious damage as a result of Friday night’s storm when high winds lifted the third base grandstand into the air and crashing to the ground along the foul line. The grandstand appears to be a total loss.

The game between New Market and Waynesboro was halted in the fifth inning and will be replayed. No makeup date has been announced.

The grandstand was initially pushed forward approximately three feet before coming to rest when the next big gust carried it onto the field. In the process, the protective netting along the third base line was pulled down as was a pole on which were mounted two public address speakers.

There appears to be little to no damage to the playing surface.
