The sting of defeat was motivation for the Fishburne Military School postgrad basketball team Wednesday night.
“We came out playing hard because we took a loss last week. We wanted to come out with some intensity,” said Jeremy Harris (6’7”, 185, Greensboro, Coastal Carolina), after the Caissons had posted a 114-88 victory over Western Virginia Community College in Alumni Memorial Gymnasium Wednesday night.
The Rapids (0-4) hung around a lot longer than FMS would have wanted. The game hovered at the 10- to 12-point mark for much of the first half, and a flurry midway through the second half had Western Virginia within nine at one point.
Fishburne (5-1) created separation with pressure defense that fueled a backbreaking 23-6 run.
“Our talent and our athleticism wore them down a little bit. Overall as a coaching staff we’re not too pleased with our performance this evening,” assistant coach Mel Abrams said.
Chris Shields (6’8”, 180, Martinshurg, Va.) led the Caissons with 21 points. Harris had 20, and Lyrik Shreiner (6’4”, 190, Phoenix, Ariz.) had a season-high 14.
Damion Harris had 19 points to lead Western Virginia.
