Director of Virginia Youth Violence Project to speak at Bridgewater College

Dewey G. Cornell, professor of education in the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education and director of the Virginia Youth Violence Project, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, in Cole Hall at Bridgewater College.

A forensic clinical psychologist, Cornell has worked with juvenile and adult violent offenders, testified in criminal proceedings and legislative hearings, and consulted on violence prevention efforts.

Cornell is also an associate director of UVA’s YOUTH-NEX, devoted to promoting healthy youth development, educational attainment and learning.

He is the author of more than 100 publications in psychology and education, including studies of juvenile homicide, school safety, bullying and psychological assessment of psychopathy and violence.

Two of his most recent books are School Violence: Fears Versus Facts and Guidelines for Responding to Student Threats of Violence.

In May 2007, Cornell testified about college campus safety before the U.S. House Education and Labor Committee.

Cornell earned M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in clinical psychology from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.

The program is free and open to the public.
