Cycling for a cause: Former Waynesboro YMCA preschool teacher makes donation to childcare

Justin Underwood was at the Waynesboro YMCA on Friday to make a special delivery. The former Y preschool teacher raised $1,643.32 for the YMCA Childcare program while taking part in the Sept. 5 Tour de Valley cycling competition.

The donation will go toward scholarships for childcare participants at the Y.

Underwood spent a few minutes in his old stomping grounds in the childcare classroom on Friday after connecting with childcare director Rebecca Patton to drop off the donation, reading a story to a group of afterschool program participants.

He expressed his thanks to the Y for the role that it played in his life. He met his wife during his time in the childcare program, and they now have a 23-month-old daughter.

“The Y helped shape in ways, the husband, father and person that I am today,” Underwood said.
