A proposed ordinance that would require moped riders in Waynesboro to wear helmets passed an important hurdle tonight.
“This will probably save lives in the future, and anything that saves lives must be a good law,” said city resident Harold Petit, one of two speakers to address the proposed ordinance in a public hearing tonight.
Both Petit and city resident Daniel Durrett spoke in favor of the ordinance, which was introduced in the wake of an accident involving a moped that led to the death of 50-year-old James Michael Baber earlier this month.
City council first began reviewing a possible ordinance in this area last year.
City Councilwoman Nancy Dowdy introduced the ordinance for consideration at council’s meeting on Aug. 11. Vice Mayor Frank Lucente seconded the motion to introduce.
