Corey Stewart wins Republican Senate primary

Contributors

democrats republicansCorey Stewart has emerged as the winner of a contentious Republican Senate primary, and will face incumbent U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine in the fall.

Stewart is outpacing Nick Freitas by 5,110 votes with 2,514 of 2,569 statewide voting precincts reporting as of 9 p.m. Tuesday night.

E.W. Jackson is running a distant third.

In case you’re just now realizing that there was a Republican Senate primary, Stewart is the one so batshit crazy that he actually got fired by the Trump presidential campaign, which, how is that possible? Stewart then, as a candidate for the Republican nomination for governor, allied himself with white nationalist blogger Jason Kessler, who later organized the deadly Aug. 12 neo-Nazi rally in Charlottesville.

Despite all of this, Stewart somehow only narrowly lost the primary to mainstream favorite Ed Gillespie.

Not surprisingly, Stewart is promising tonight to run a “vicious” campaign against Kaine, who has a significant money advantage at this stage of the campaign, with $10.7 million in campaign cash, to Stewart’s $161,000.

Kaine, indeed, is running scared.

“A cruder imitation of Donald Trump who stokes white supremacy and brags about being ‘ruthless and vicious,’ Corey Stewart would be an embarrassment for Virginia in the U.S. Senate, where he would eliminate health care for millions of Americans and slash public education funding,” Kaine campaign spokesman Ian Sams said tonight. “In sharp contrast, Tim Kaine is fighting to make Virginia and our country work for all, where good jobs, health care and education are available to everyone and all people are treated with dignity and respect. That’s the choice voters face in November and we will keep working hard in every corner of Virginia to win voters’ support.”

Expect to see Stewart make Robert E. Lee and Lee’s horse, Traveller, his co-running mates as we get to Labor Day and into the fall.
