Construction at Route 29-Rio Road will continue through Memorial Day weekend

route 29Construction on the Rio Road grade-separated intersection will continue over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Most of the construction is happening behind barrier walls so there should be minimal impacts to motorists, but travelers should be alert for dump trucks and other vehicles turning in or out of the work zone.

Motorists will encounter traffic restrictions from approximately one-half mile north to one-half mile south of the intersection. Message boards and signs will direct motorists through the work zone. The speed limit within the project work zone is 35 mph at all times.

On Route 29 north and south of the Rio Road intersection:

  • Between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. there will be two lanes southbound and three lanes northbound
  • Right turns onto Rio Road will be permitted at all times
  • No left turns at the intersection at any time
  • Between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. there will be at least one lane open both northbound and southbound
  • All business entrances will remain open during business hours

On Rio Road east and west of Route 29:

  • Traffic on Rio Road will not be able to cross Route 29
  • Right turns onto Route 29 will be permitted at all times
  • No left turns at the intersection at any time
  • All business entrances will remain open during business hours

Alternate travel routes during the construction are Berkmar Drive to Rio Road, Woodbrook Drive or Hilton Heights Drive, and Hillsdale Drive to Branchlands Drive. Information about the project and resources to help navigate through the work zone during construction can be found on the Route 29 Solutions web site: www.Route29Solutions.org. Real time traffic information, including access to the traffic cameras in the Charlottesville region, is on the home page. Also available on the web site:

  • Get Around Map with details of permitted movements and traffic restrictions at the Route 29-Rio Road intersection
  • Alternate Routes Map of signed detour routes during construction

The Get Around Maps are also available at businesses in the project area.

The Rio Road grade-separated intersection project is one of eight Route 29 Solutions highway projects to improve safety and increase mobility along the Route 29 corridor in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. Information about upcoming lane closures and other traffic impacts, as well as news about the projects, is posted on the Route 29 Solutions web site on the News and Traffic Alerts page.

Mailbag: Biden needs to step aside, Democrats need to be willing to play dirty

Your article yesterday about the need for Joe Biden to drop out of the race was spot on. In my opinion, the only way for Democratic voters to pressure the Democratic establishment to make this happen is to contact their Democratic representatives and senators and commit to boycotting the election if Mr. Biden is on...
