Kay S and Bernie R Pool TournamentCongratulations to Bernie R and Kay S on winning the Waynesboro Senior Center Summer 2013 8-Ball Double Elimination Billiard Tournament.  Bernie handily came in first, but it was a close match for second place between Kay and third runner-up, Gary A.

Bernie’s been playing pool since he was in high school. When he wasn’t playing sports, you could find him at Beard’s or Painter’s Pool Room in downtown Waynesboro.  “There wasn’t much else for us to do back then,” he says, “So mostly on Saturday, I’d meet a good buddy, and we’d play some Crazy Keeley, 5-ball or 9-ball. I’ve been coming to the Center since 1991, and really enjoy playing here.”

Kay started playing pool over a dozen years ago, when she lived in Connecticut.  She describes pool as “a game of concentration.  You always have to be thinking.” Her good friend, Jim Mazuko taught her at a Senior Center near her former home. She also played at a center in Shelton that was so posh, it reminded her of a night club.  Since moving to Waynesboro, she enjoys playing regularly at the Center.

“At times I get very frustrated, because my ball just stops — just short of where I want it to go,” said Kay. “I don’t have a lot of power, so I have to always be accurate.”  Kay’s advice to other women who want to learn to play — ask a friend to teach you.

The Center’s Recreation Room has two slate billiards tables and is open to members during regular hours of operation.  Playing pool is just one of several recreational options at the Center. Other games include darts and corn hole, board games, a bridge group that meets regularly and opportunities to play board games with friends. New members are welcome.
