Cold-shooting EMU falls at Randolph

The RAD Center at Randolph College is a tough place to play, and the Runnin Royals gave evidence to that Saturday afternoon, shooting just 28% in a 64-47 loss to the WildCats.

The team nearly shot better from three point range than from inside the arc in the game, and canned their first two attempts from outside in grabbing a 6-4 lead.  Randolph then scored the next nine points to skip ahead 13-6.

After another EMU three, the men went silent from the floor and RC methodically built the lead to 22-9.

The Royals didn’t get their first two-point basket until R.J. Sims (Fort Washington, MD/Friendly) made a layup with 10:09 to go in the first.  That was part of a 20-7 run, which Sims finished with a jumper to tie the score at 29-29.

Eastern Mennonite trailed by only two at halftime at 32-30, which seemed a good place to be after trailing by 13.

Adam Burroughs (Roanoke, VA/Northside) opened the second with a triple, putting the men up 33-32, but Randolph responded by attacking the hoop.

The WildCats scored their next 17 points on either layups or free throws.  Back-to-back three pointers then landed the knockout punch, putting the Randolph lead at 55-42 with 5:57 to play.

After hitting 6-of-17 trey attempts in the first 20 minutes, the Royals made only 2-of-13 in the second, finishing at 8-30 for 26%.  Overall, EMU was 16-57 for 28% from the floor and 7-15 for 47% from the free throw line.

Randolph was effective enough to control the decision, going 22-52 for 42%.

Dajon Daniel (Fredericksburg, VA/Mountain View) was the lone Royal in double figures, finishing with 10.  Ryan Yates (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams) added nine from the bench.  All his points came from three pointers.

Burroughs, Sims and Andrew Thorne (Front Royal, VA/Skyline) each scored eight, as the rest of the team combined for just four points.  Owen Longacre (Telford, PA/Christopher Dock) led the men with seven rebounds.

Colton Hunt (Whittier, NC/Smoky Mountain) led Randolph with 22 points and six steals.  Derrick Woods-Morrow (Greensboro, NC/Northeast Guilford) added 15 points and 11 rebounds.
