If Seth Greenberg was in the dugout, I might be worried. But with ol’ Seth safely tucked away in a TV studio basement somewhere getting ready for the next basketball season, I’m thinking Virginia Tech is looking good for a possible NCAA Tournament at-large bid – in baseball.
The Hokies (35-19, 15-14 ACC) of course have a chance to make that point moot as the #6 seed in this week’s ACC Tournament. Win the tournament, and Tech gets the conference’s automatic bid. But even short of that, Virginia Tech has done more than enough already to lock up a spot in next week’s NCAA Regionals.
First and foremost, there’s the NCAA RPI, which has the Hokies sitting pretty at #15, notably in front of both Miami and Georgia Tech and also ahead of perennial powers UCLA and Florida. Then factor in series wins over Florida State (#5 RPI) and Virginia (#3 RPI), and the picture starts to get clearer.
And then there’s this week’s chance to add to that resume. The Hokies are in a tournament pool with, yep, FSU and UVa. Throw in a game with a desperate Yellow Jacket squad that probably does need to go no worse than 2-1 to lock up an NCAA bid, and it promises to be an interesting week for Virginia Tech baseball.
